What it does
The 2FA backup codes tool makes a list of random one-time codes you can store in a safe place, for use when you cannot reach your authenticator app. You choose how many, how long, which characters and whether to group them. The codes come from your browser’s secure random generator and are never sent anywhere.
How to use it
- 1Choose how many codes and how long.
- 2Make the codes.
- 3Save them in a password manager, or print them and keep the sheet safe.
Questions
Are these codes accepted by my account?
Only if the service lets you enter your own codes. Most services make their own. Use this when a service asks you to bring one, or for your own records.
How random are they?
They use crypto.getRandomValues with no bias towards any character. A 10 character letter and digit code has about 50 bits.
Do you keep a copy?
No. The codes are gone when you leave the page.
